If you’re planning to go into one of the many speech pathology positions, it’s very important that you take a look at not only your goals, but also your own personality. Here are a few of the top personality traits you need to ensure that a speech therapy career is the best fit for you.

  1. Patience. In order to be successful in your speech therapy career, you need to be able to take a step back and allow your patients to work at their own pace. Without patience, you will not be able to see any significant improvement – especially if you’re working with a patient that is starting at ground zero, perhaps a stroke victim who must relearn speach completely.
  2. Understanding. Regardless of which one of the speech pathology positions you choose to enter, you will need to have a very understanding outlook on life. Many of the patients that you see won’t be able to communicate their needs very well. This will be very frustrating – for you and for your patient. However, always remember that it is a lot harder for the patient.
  3. Team player. In most cases, your patients will probably need more than one type of therapy. In order for the treatment to be as successful as possible, you will need to communicate and work well with all the other therapists and doctors on the case. This isn’t always easy, but without coordination between doctors there will be no results.

One of the most important things to remember as a therapist is that you must not express frustration around the patient, which is why all three traits are necessary.
